We have previously sent out warnings regarding phone scams where people proclaiming to be from the ATO are telephoning and trying to extort money or personal information using threatening means.
Unfortunately, this scam is still doing the rounds.
The ATO has issued a warning on this – full details can be found here.
If you receive a call from someone claiming to be from the ATO and aren’t sure of their legitimacy, remember these points:
- the ATO will never threaten to arrest you or send you to jail
- they will not ask for credit card or bank account details
- they will not offer to meet you at a Post Office so that you can make payment
Most importantly, please DO NOT give them any personal information and hang up immediately.
If you’re not sure whether you have an outstanding debt, please contact our office and we can look into this for you.
