It’s a sad indictment of our times but scammers are getting more sophisticated by the day. Their activity has increased so substantially that it has prompted the ATO to release a statement regarding scammers purporting to be from the ATO.
As your tax agents, the ATO will generally call us in the first instance. So anyone telephoning you directly – especially if they are being aggressive or rude – is likely to be a scammer. Please hang up immediately and don’t feel pressured to provide them with any information. If you are unsure of the authenticity of the call, please contact our office and we can confirm with the ATO on your behalf.
One of the scams also involves allegedly having a 3-way conversation between the ATO, the tax agent and the individual. Please note that as part of our service, we will liaise with the ATO on your behalf so they should not be contacting you directly unannounced.
These scams aren’t just limited to telephone calls, they can also be via emails or SMS’s. Again, as your tax agent, all correspondence should come directly to us. The only exception to this is if you have a myGov account – then you will receive correspondence to your secure portal. So if you are receiving any unexpected emails or SMS’s from the ATO, then please check their validity with our office before opening or clicking on any links.
If you have any questions regarding this, please don’t hesitate to contact our office.
